Disney Junior has optioned the rights for the best-selling book series Fancy Nancy, which will be developed into an original animated TV movie and series launching in 2017.

In addition, HarperCollins and Disney Publishing will collaborate on book editions based on the TV series. Written by Jane O’Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser, the books are geared at kids 2 to 7 and follow the adventures of a girl who likes to be fancy in everything she does, from her creative, elaborate attire to her advanced vocabulary.

“Children have been captivated by Fancy Nancy’s wit and irrepressible spirit for a decade, and we are very eager to give her an even bigger stage on which to perform,” said Nancy Kanter, the executive VP of original programming and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide.

Susan Katz, the president and publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books, added: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Disney Junior to bring Fancy Nancy to the small screen and to the next generation of fans. As we celebrate the tenth anniversary of this best-selling series, it’s exciting to see our beloved character making her TV debut.”
