Julie Beneteau
The Kitchen’s International Sales Director, Julie Beneteau, brings the initiative to highlight the challenges of neurodiversity in the industry and in our future.
“We encourage content creators to write stories that tell the story, with new characters, that educate everyone, with characters we can all relate to!”
The recent CDSA summit in London brought together industry professionals and leaders for a day of learning about neurodiversity. From actors to writers and production professionals, each shared their personal story of facing a challenge, whether it’s one they face daily, or that of their children, family members, and friends.
“Neurodiversity is not a superpower,” explained Julie Beneteau. “It’s a blinding disability.” We all know that in the workplace or in a concert hall, a person in a wheelchair would be accommodated. But what about someone who suffers from panic attacks, sensory issues, or high anxiety?
Julie, who lives with a neurodivergent relative, and the panel, which included many industry colleagues, believe that the neurodivergent brain thinks innovatively, and therefore, many creative people, they believe, are neurodivergent without a precise diagnosis.
“Talking to clients and partners from different countries, it’s known that neurodivergent people struggle both in school and at work. How can we, in the media and entertainment industry, help them be heard? How can we encourage our colleagues to produce content that represents neurodiversity, performed and voiced by real neurodivergent actors?”
We encourage content creators to write stories that tell the story, that introduce new types of characters, that educate us all, with characters we can all relate to!
“The Kitchen has colleagues, family, and friends who have been impacted by the neurodivergent differences that affect so many of us,” Julie concluded. “We work with numerous groups to provide answers and expand general awareness. The audio description and subtitle services we offer, in all languages, are good examples of what we believe is necessary to expand a global audience. We look forward to collaborating with content providers as the individualities of their characters expand.”
