MIPJUNIOR: A PRELUDE TO MIPCOM

Panel Front First Favorites to Lasting Fandom: Disney’sApproach to Kids & Family Franchises. Fallow by a Disney Cocktail Lunch.

DISNEY TAKES CENTER STAGE. The event dedicated to the children’s and youth content business held on October 10 and 11 as a prelude to MIPCOM featured the entertainment giant Disney as a key protagonist. Before a packed auditorium, executives from Disney Kids & Family participated in a panel titled “From Early Favorites to Lasting Fandom: Disney’s Approach to Kids and Family Audiences.” The session provided an up-to-date look at how the entertainment giant is transforming its strategy to meet the demands of a young, highly fragmented, and rapidly evolving demographic. Participants included Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family, and Alyssa Sapire, Director of Original Programming and Strategy for Disney Jr. Charlie Andrews, Executive Vice President of Live Action; Zack Olin, Senior Vice President of Animation Development and Current Series; and Gino Guzzardo, Vice President of Multiplatform Content.

The central theme was the profound transformation in children’s audiovisual consumption habits. Ayo Davis elaborated on the current landscape, noting that today’s youth consume everything from ‘Bluey’ to ‘Squid Game.’ “Change is the new normal; therefore, we took a step back to rethink our strategy for engaging audiences from an early age,” Davis remarked. She highlighted that the preschool division, led by Alyssa Sapire, will play a crucial role in The Walt Disney Company’s outreach to the youngest viewers laying the groundwork for a lasting relationship and a lifelong affinity, long before they ever set foot in a theme park.

Classic franchises such as ‘Spidey and His Amazing Friends’ and ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’ remain essential pillars; however, Sapire emphasized the division’s significant investment in original intellectual property, specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of preschoolers. She also pointed to the resounding success of ‘SuperKitties’ as an example of a modern, scalable franchise. Following this vibrant presentation, the company behind the famous Mickey Mouse hosted a cocktail-lunch at the Palais des Festivals, the venue for MIPJUNIOR.

BIG NEWS: THE MERGER OF BANIJAY AND ALL3MEDIA

The merger sparked significant industry discussion. Jeff Zucker and Marco Bassetti delivered their first joint presentation following the merger of Banijay Entertainment and All3Media. Meanwhile, David Decker gave his first interview as President of Skydance Content Sales to ‘MIPCOM Daily News’. Furthermore, Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, was honored with the ‘Variety’ Vanguard Award in recognition of her leadership and impact on the global entertainment industry.

YouTube returned with an expanded presence, alongside companies such as Dentsu, Meta, and TikTok, as well as creator-led businesses and innovative firms in the field of AI. The Summit brought together leaders from the worlds of media, technology, brands, agencies, content creation, studios, and artificial intelligence to explore how to develop intellectual property, finance content, and establish commercial partnerships all with the goal of transforming new ideas into concrete actions.

Insights from leaders in creativity and production:

Billy Parks, Director of FOX Creator Studios, noted: “We have been engaged in discussions about building alongside creators, with partners capable of helping their ideas reach a global audience.” Cathy Boxall, from Dentsu, stated: “The discussion centers on the idea that brands should be involved in content creation.”

Nathalie Garcia, Managing Director of ITV Studios Iberia (Spain and Portugal), shared in an exclusive interview with TVMAS: “The challenge is to create a production hub in Spain to develop formats that we can take to multiple countries. We have powerful brands such as ‘The Voice,’ which is present in 80 territories, ‘The Voice Kids,’ and ‘Pasapalabra’ that serve as major showcases. From Spain, we can bring these to every continent where ITV Studios shines in its own right.”

Mediawan Kids & Family, an independent European studio dedicated to the production and distribution of children’s and family content, and Toon2Tango a German children’s and family entertainment company that is part of LEONINE Animation Studios have entered into an exclusive global licensing and merchandising agreement. This significant combined portfolio of licensed properties includes both upcoming projects and established intellectual properties from the Group’s catalog. Notable examples include the ‘Astro Boy’ reboot (from Method Animation), the series ‘Wadoo’ originally conceived for the digital space and ‘Maddie + Triggs,’ the successful preschool series distributed by Mediawan Kids & Family.
