INTERVIEW. HUGO DEVANA A creative, producer and director of international stature

Public television in the Dominican Republic competes head-to-head with private channels and the renowned Argentine producer is contributing to the satisfaction of the country’s audiences, as an advisor on RTVD channel 4 and spoke with TVMAS.

You are based in Miami, but also on the paradisiacal island of the Dominican Republic…

My relationship with the Island began in 2008 when I took charge of the dance reality show, QUIEN BAILA MEJOR, between Telesistemas (Dominican Republic) and Wapa from Puerto Rico. Then in 2010  I did the 2nd season, this time between Telesistemas and Venevisión from Venezuela. The success was enormous, so I was invited to do other shows, including “Buscándole un Novio a Mamá”. And since last year I have returned as an advisor to the country’s official channel. It is an honor to have the opportunity to share my experience in this wonderful country.

Were you also in Colombia?

Yes, I was at RCN doing the talk show “Hablando Claro”

How is your alliance for some projects with the company of the Venezuelan Daniel Ferrer Cubillas going?

I am an independent producer and at this point in my life, I do what I really want to do, with different production companies. “Dramáticas” was a production of Hispanomedio, it was very gratifying. I returned to one of the countries I love, Venezuela, to do it with great professionals. It took 5 months to make 12 chapters. Today I can say that, thanks to the support received by RTVD channel 4 and its director, Yvan Ruiz, Dominicans and Venezuelans who live in the Dominican Republic will be able to enjoy good programming.

What is local television like and what genres do they focus on?

Television in the Dominican Republic goes through the same problems that happen in other countries. The lack of risk and always doing the same thing has discouraged the public. I’m not talking about formats, I’m talking about how to make the formats. A desk and three people saying anything doesn’t interest anyone. Better content is increasingly needed. You can watch a full season of anything, but if you don’t get hooked in the first 5 minutes, no one will give you another chance.

As for the open TV newscasts, which are the most watched?

According to the numbers I get, the most watched newscasts are from Antena Latina, Telesistemas and Colorvision.

What makes the Dominican Republic so attractive for foreign films?

The Dominican Republic not only has locations to make any type of film, but, with the film law, it has grown as a thriving and important industry. Better films are made with better professionals in the area. Technicians, directors, scriptwriters, producers, etc.

To finish, he closes with a great Argentine actor, Franchela. “In a dialogue in the film ‘The Secret in Their Eyes’ it is said that one can change one’s house, one’s country, one’s tastes, one’s sex, one’s religion, one’s God, but one cannot change one’s passion. That says it all.”
