At a press conference held by Zoom, award-winning Argentine filmmaker Lucía Puenzo formally introduced the team of “Señorita 89,” an ambitious 8-episode miniseries that has been filming in Mexico for two weeks.
The series is a production of Fremantle and Fabula de Chile for Pantaya and STARZPLAY. It is an international co-production, which can be seen in the United States and Puerto Rico by Pantaya and which seeks to conquer the audience on television and its electronic devices trying to guess its outcome but at the same time it will discover the background of beauty pageants that are traditional in Latin America.
“As close in time as Mexico is in ’89, the world was really different, there were many women fighting silent battles and that is what this series tells about,” said Puenzo, who comes from producing “La jauría” on Amazon Prime. , which featured Daniela Vega and Antonia Zegers in the leading roles.
According to the showrunner, it is a series in which “we re-assemble a team with the Larrain brothers, which has a great cast of very young Mexican actresses and actors.”
It is a dramatic thriller that follows 4 of the 32 misses of a beauty pageant, who arrive at “La Encantada”, an estate as paradisiacal as it is full of secrets. The 4 misses will have to fight for that crown and to get out alive from that place that will slowly show its most infernal face.
The directors are his brother Nicolás (both sons of Oscar winner Luis Puenzo), Spanish filmmaker Silvia Quer, who has stood out in series such as “El desastre que dejas”, “Elite”, “Velvet” and “Gran hotel” , and the Mexican Jimena Montemayor, who made the feature films “Restos de viento” and “En la sangre”.
Each member of the vast cast later shared their excitement for working with Lucia. Marcelo Alonso, the only non-Mexican on the team, spoke first. Who has collaborated with Pablo Larrain in “El club” and “Neruda”, and worked in his native country for Puenzo in “La jauría”, embodies the patriarch of the contest, a doctor who receives the contestants to transform them into what they want them to Sean and Ianis Guerrero, who stood out in “Club de Cuervos”.
