- This July, the channel will premiere a vertical telenovela on digital platforms titled ‘Mira de quién te burlaste’ (Look Who You Mocked). It is directed by César Opazo and written by Jaime Morales.
“How lovely and entertaining. I think it’s wonderful!” remarks renowned Chilean writer and filmmaker Pablo Illanes regarding Canal 13’s upcoming project for July. The vertical telenovela ‘Mira de quién te burlaste’ set to premiere on the channel’s digital platforms in the coming weeks will serve as a tribute to ‘Fuera de Control’, one of the most iconic telenovelas beloved by the Chilean public and a cult classic in the history of Chilean television.

‘Fuera de Control’ aired on Canal 13 during the first half of 1999. It told the revenge story of Silvana Maldonado (Úrsula Achterberg), the victim of a cruel prank that resulted in her stepfather’s death and left her with severe facial burns. Twelve years later, having physically recovered, she decides to exact revenge on those responsible, starting with the villains Axel Schumacher (Luciano Cruz-Coke) and Sarita Mellafe (Paulina Urrutia). Now, 27 years after that original premiere, Canal 13 is paying tribute to this iconic story.

THE STORY BEHIND ‘MIRA DE QUIEN TE BURLASTE’
This story blends revenge and themes of bullying, set against the backdrop of locations outside Santiago, Chile specifically the Las Araucarias Vineyard in the Melipilla area. It features a cast of prominent stars, including María José Illanes, Damián Bodenhöfer, Victoria de Gregorio, Diego Ruiz, and Coca Guazzini, all under the direction of César Opazo and written by Jaime Morales.
The successor to ‘Un corazón como el tuyo’ centers on Silvana Mardones (María José Illanes), a beautiful taxi driver bearing the emotional scars of a past marked by school bullying. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she happens to pick up Eric Fernández (Damián Bodenhöfer) the man who cruelly humiliated her fifteen years ago over her weight and whom she has never been able to forget. Realizing that he does not recognize her due to her physical transformation she is now slim Silvana decides to infiltrate his workplace at a prestigious vineyard to exact cold, calculated revenge. However, her quest for personal justice becomes complicated by the emergence of unexpected secrets regarding her best friend, Eliseo Castro (Diego Ruiz); the machinations of a jealous rival, Fernanda Wilkins (Victoria de Gregorio); the powerful influence of the vineyard’s owner, Bianca del Pino (Coca Guazzini); and Eric’s own shady dealings.

Pablo Illanes the creative force behind major telenovela hits such as ‘Adrenalina’, ‘Playa salvaje’, ‘Machos’, ‘Alguien te mira’, ‘¿Dónde está Elisa?’, ‘Perdona nuestros pecados’, and Generación 98’, among others admits that he finds this tribute to ‘Fuera de control’ “fascinating’. ‘Fuera de control’ was actually born as a tribute to another telenovela, ‘Los títeres’. Channel 13 is known for having hosted the most important drama department in the history of our fiction programming.”
Regarding ‘Fuera de control’, the writer notes, “In the last 27 years, I’ve basically done it all I’ve been involved in projects that failed miserably and others that were astronomically successful but no telenovela, whether a hit, a phenomenon, a mediocre effort, or anything else, compares to the ‘Fuera de control’ fanbase. I believe the audience that followed ‘Fuera de control’ was forever marked by some of its characters. Regardless of whether the story has aged well or poorly, I think it had a profound psychological impact on an entire generation. I’m not entirely sure if that generation watched it during its initial run or the rerun since it actually performed better the second time around but it is a telenovela that met the psychological expectations of many people. Many viewers identified with the rejected characters, like Silvana and Rodrigo, and I believe that shapes you forever as a viewer.”

The screenwriter recounts that the impact is such that people constantly ask him where they can watch every episode of the telenovela or when a remake might be coming. He adds, “It happened with ‘Generación 98’, too; people looked for similarities or parallels between the characters. I’d say I receive about five messages a day regarding ‘Fuera de control’, and anything I post on social media about the show always draws the most attention every single time.”
