Devotees of “La Santa Muerte” have grown increasingly conspicuous on both sides of the border in recent years and Canal 22 Mexico, the arts and entertainment channel, explores the “Holy Death” cult phenomenon in the documentary, “Santisima Muerte: Niña Blanca, Niña Bonita.”
Directed by Pavel Valenzuela Aramburo, “Santisima Muerte: Niña Blanca, Niña Bonita” will air on Tuesday, November 1 starting at 9:30 p.m. PST/12:30 a.m. EST.
The one hour documentary addresses the practices of popular mysticism in the US-Mexico border from the cult of Santa death, which by the fervor of his devotees has become a widespread presence on both sides of the border. Through interviews and testimonies of believers who carry statues of Santa Muerte as well as tattoos on their bodies, viewers will see the growth and influence of this cult and how it has expanded all the way to Los Angeles due to the presence of Mexican immigrants living in the United States.
“Santisima Muerte: Niña Blanca, Niña Bonita” takes viewers to several different places of worship including Barrio de Tepito (Mexico City), Ciudad Juarez (Chihuahua), and Nuevo Laredo (Tamaulipas) as well as locations in Los Angeles. Viewers will also be introduced to the wide demographic of people – children, women, men and senior citizens – who have become worshippers. Also, the documentary shows different points of view expressed by the church about this devotion.
