Why do so many teen series champion LGBTIQA+ representation? Is including diversity the best way to get new generations to watch movies? How can we engage the audience of the future through today’s media? These are some of the questions the roundtable “Diversity in Fiction and Gen Z: A Love Story?”  an event taking place on Wednesday, June 17, aims to answer.

Participants include Margarita Guerrero Calderón (Director General of the Youth Institute), artist Samantha Hudson, Cristina Rocamora Ardèvol (Development Coordinator at Elastica Films), actress Ouyang Zhu, and Paula Serna Arranz (Head of Research at ODA). The session will be moderated by Pilar Toro, Director of Marketing and Communication at Filmin. The event is organized by the Observatory for Diversity in Audiovisual Media (ODA) and Filmin, with the support of Creative Europe MEDIA and State Museums.

OBJECTIVES

To unravel the relationship between on-screen diversity and the interests of Gen Z, demonstrating through data and the insights of various industry professionals the importance of embracing inclusive narratives.

This dialogue is part of a series of activities organized by the Observatory and State Museums to mark the release of the *ODA 2026 Report*, which is being presented at Espacio Fundación Telefónica. This pioneering European study analyzes the representation of LGBTIQA+ individuals, people of color, and people with disabilities in Spanish cinema and series, with the aim of dismantling existing stereotypes surrounding these communities.

The second activity takes place on Thursday, June 18, at 6:00 PM at the Cerralbo Museum. A screening of the film ‘Extraño Río’ the debut feature by Jaume Claret Muxart, which chronicles the sexual awakening of a queer teenager. To explore what makes this coming-of-age story so compelling, a post-screening discussion will be held featuring filmmaker and ‘Sabor a Queer’ host David Velduque, model and actor Michael ‘Lord Ebano’ Arhin, and ODA research coordinator Salva Tabone.  evacalleja@prismaideas.es

ODA (Observatory for Diversity in Audiovisual Media) is a non-profit association that analyzes how LGBTIQA+ individuals, people of color, people with disabilities, and people with diverse body types are portrayed in Spanish audiovisual fiction, with the aim of driving change and fostering more responsible and diverse media.
