THE 36TH MAR DEL PLATA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL HAS BEGUN

Produced by the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) and carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Nation.

The artistic director, Cecilia Barrionuevo and the president of the Festival, Fernando Juan Lima, who said: “We are going to see the film Madres Paralelas, Pedro Almódovar’s last film, thanks to the courtesy of Netflix that has made this projection on the big screen possible.

The melodrama, in which motherhood and historical memory intersect, stars Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit, Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Rossy de Palma, Israel Elejalde and Julieta Serrano.

The opening was made by the Minister of Culture of the Nation, Tristán Bauer; the president of INCAA, Luis Puenzo; the mayor of the City of Mar del Plata, Guillermo Montenegro; the Minister of Production, Science and Innovation of the Province of Buenos Aires, Augusto Costa; the actor Pepe Soriano and members of the families of Pino Solanas and Coco Blaustein.

Mayor Guillermo Montenegro welcomed: “Mar del Plata is proud to have an international category festival, and it is very nice to see the postcards that are generated in this festival. We know that we live in the most beautiful city in the world and we like that they come from other countries to enjoy it ”.

The screening in theaters of the long-awaited feature film by the Spanish filmmaker will close this 36th edition of the festival. The melodrama, in which motherhood and historical memory intersect, stars Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit, Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Rossy de Palma, Israel Elejalde and Julieta Serrano.

Cecilia Barrionuevo excitedly said “In this 36th edition dedicated to Coco Blaustein, we celebrate, program and share a cinema that belongs to her time, we do it in a place as special as movie theaters. This community meets again here in front of a screen and that is a possibility that seemed unthinkable a while ago, so now is the time for great joy. Cinema creates art, creates stories and creates affections. ”

At the Festival, the Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to actor Pepe Soriano, who said: “With 92 years and 74 years of work, I thank the world of cinema, theater, the world of art where everyone is friends. The community gave me the joy of being an actor, of being alive and today sharing life with you ”.

The Minister of Production, Science and Technological Innovation of the province of Buenos Aires, Augusto Costa declared: “It is a great joy to receive in Mar del Plata an international festival recognized throughout the world. And also, to put the cinema back where it needs to be, with people in the theaters, and that this mixed version will allow many people to enjoy the proposals. ”

The centenary of Fernando Fernán Gómez will also be celebrated with the screening of “Manicomio”, a tribute to the critic Manny Farber will be held, and a selection of Argentine animated short films will be exhibited, recovered by the Pablo Ducrós Hickens Cinema Museum.
